If you want to do some serious long distance dirt road rides with river crossings on your Africa Twin and with a group of other riders kicking up some dust, then here is some good advice on Air Filters:

OEM and Paper type filters, although very good in dry conditions, if you drop your bike in water and the paper gets wet, then good luck with trying to dry them out!

If you don’t plan any wading or river crossings, then the upside is that it is relatively easy to tap out the dust at the end of each day.

Forget Foam filters on big adventure bikes, have you seen the size of the surface area on the Africa Twin filters? 1mm of dust on such a small area doesn't take long to build up, and 2mm of dust means it has pretty much stopped functioning as a filter.

Foam filters from companies such as TwinAir and UniFilter are designed for easy frequent cleaning (which is why they are so popular on motocross bikes) but you don't want to be doing this on a long multi day dirt ride, especially on the Africa Twin and its’ not so easy to get to filters.

Oiled Pleated cotton filters from manufacturers such as BMC, DNA or K&N.

With these you get the best of both worlds, they can be dried out if wet, (it's hard to actually get an oiled filter wet) and the pleated design gives a far greater surface area than a plain flat Foam one, so much so that the pleats can be quite dusty and yet still not restrict the breathing. They also don't require cleaning and re-oiling as often as a normal Foam one.

BMC air filters are produced using a "Full Moulding" system that enables the characteristic red filter to be realised from a single mould with no welded joints thus avoiding easy breakage. The rubber used in BMC air filtering systems has a long life, is very durable and has optimum adhesion characteristics to all shapes of airboxes.

BMC filters are made of a multi-layered cotton gauze soaked with low viscosity oil covered with an epoxy coated alloy mesh to ensure protection from petrol fumes and oxidization due to air humidity.

All BMC air filters are pre-oiled, and they can be washed and regenerated by using the appropriate BMC regeneration kit.

This kit contains 2 BMC Performance Air Filters for the Honda CRF1000 Africa Twin.

The panel / cylindrical air filter commonly referred to as "replacement air filter", is installed in your vehicle's original airbox to replace the OEM air filter. It is made of highly performing materials that allow an increased air flow combined with a more efficient filtration, guaranteeing containment of all impurities from as small as 7 microns (compared to OEM's 10 microns).
