We are very proud of the fact that all of our brake line components are made in Britain, including all of our stainless steel braided brake hose and all of our stainless steel brake line fittings. Indeed we are the only company in the UK to manufacture all of our mainline fittings in-house on our own Star Micronics CNC Machines. Whilst others may prefer to buy their fittings and hose from a third party and simply assemble and brand in house, we have always striven towards self-sufficiency, guaranteeing supply times, quality and overall finish to our parts.

The investment, as you can imagine is huge, but the return is even greater — knowing that we have full control over the design, manufacture, finish and quality of our mainline products allows us to be rightly proud of the products we supply, and that the brake lines are all designed, manufactured and assembled in Britain. Even the raw stainless steel bar that is used, is sourced within the EU to give us maximum quality assurance and traceability on our product line.

We are the only company in the UK that you can visit and see your brake line being made whilst seeing all our stainless steel banjo fittings, stainless steel banjo bolts and stainless steel ferrules used in the kit being manufactured on our own machinery on site.

QUALITY CERTIFICATION
Quality is at the forefront of all that we do. Our hoses are tested to the most stringent of requirements both in the laboratory, as laid down by federal regulations, and on the race track where they are proven time and time again.

Our hoses pass and exceed the requirements of government bodies around the globe making them street legal anywhere in the world.

All brake hoses must comply with the requirements of FMVSS-106. These requirements set out the strict test criteria that all hoses must pass to enable them to be used on the road. These requirements, as commanded by the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, are then used by the DOT (United States Of America), NHTSA (United States Of America), TuV (Germany), ADR (Australia), LTSA (New Zealand), IDR (Israel) and MOT (Europe) as the test criteria used by each country. Having passed these requirements and by registering with the above organisations, our brake lines can be used anywhere in the world.

Our brake lines have been independently tested and proved to exceed all the requirements of the tests. Many hoses fail due to the whip test when the hose is subjected to motion to mimic the movement of the hose during normal use on a vehicle. All hoses must last for 35 hours continuously on the test apparatus and are normally tested until destruction to give a sign of quality past the required time frame.

When our brake lines were subjected to the whip test ALL four test subjects were removed from the test apparatus after 40 hours and all were removed intact. In fact one hose was tested for 70 hours and another to 93 hours — and again they were BOTH removed intact.

This was something that the independent test centre had never experienced before in over 20 years of testing and the reason that two were only run for 40 hours — after the first test piece survived and was removed intact from the machine after 93 hours the other three hoses were simply to prove the quality of each hose assembly.

It is testament to the design, investigation, research and investment we put into every product. When we began making brake lines in the UK all of our competitors were selling reusable items — something that our swaged design soon removed from the marketplace with all the major names now deciding to market a fully swaged system.

• ABE KBA

We obtained full ABE approval for all of our brake line kits to allow certified entry to the German, Swiss and Austrian marketplaces. Our lines were already approved for use on all roads around the world with our FMVSS-106 approval but in some countries this means that the customer must pay an additional fee to allow the part to be added into their log book. By obtaining full KBA and ABE approval our parts can now automatically be added to the log book at any testing station without cost to the customer. By obtaining this additional certification shows that we are continually committed to offering the highest certified and quality assured products to the consumer.

Our brake lines meet and exceed all the requirements of FMVSS-106 which are used as the basis of all country specific regulations.

• SAE

SAE International is a global association of more than 128,000 engineers and related technical experts in the aerospace, automotive and commercial-vehicle industries. SAE International's core competencies are life-long learning and voluntary consensus standards development. SAE International's charitable arm is the SAE Foundation, which supports many programs, including A World In Motion® and the Collegiate Design Series. They aid the industry by helping with the writing of specifications and design principles. They also are responsible for the SAE J1403 requirement required for brake hoses used on the road of which are brake lines fully comply with.

Our brake lines have been accepted by the Australian Department Of Transports ‘ADR — Australian Design Rules’ under FMVSS-106 design criteria and have been entered on the database of certificated suppliers by the Queensland Government.

• NHTSA

NHTSA was established by the Highway Safety Act of 1970 to carry out safety programs previously administered by the National Highway Safety Bureau. Specifically, the agency directs the highway safety and consumer programs established by the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1966, the Highway Safety Act of 1966, the 1972 Motor Vehicle Information and Cost Savings Act, and succeeding amendments to these laws. Dedicated to achieving the highest standards of excellence in motor vehicle and highway safety, NHTSA works daily to help prevent crashes and their attendant costs, both human and financial. The agency strives to exceed the expectations of its customers through its core values of Integrity, Service, and Leadership.

• ISRAEL MOT

Our brake line kits have recently been added by the Israel Department Of Transport to their list of approved products. This has been extremely beneficial to us as before all brake lines had to be tested monthly by the Israel Department Of Transport. After being subjected to such rigorous testing and passing for the past 24 months we are the first and only manufacturer to have been granted this long term application. This is an important announcement as many companies simply test once and register their product but in Israel this is not the case. Each product is evaluated and tested monthly — proving the continued quality of our products.

• NZTA

Our brake lines have been accepted by the New Zealand Department Of Transport LTSA under FMVSS-106 design criteria and have been entered on the database of certificated suppliers.

THE HISTORY OF HEL PERFORMANCE

Hose-Equip was established in 1985 as an authorised Aeroquip distributor and quickly gained a reputation in the Industrial, Marine and Hydraulic marketplace for a friendly approach to both quality and service. This developed into them becoming an authorised MOD contractor and an ISO9000 quality assured company. Quality is at the fore front of what we are as a company today. In 2000 the company was acquired by the current owners for the sole purpose of targeting the performance fluid transfer marketplace. The name was changed to Hose Equip Limited and the HEL Performance brand was born. The now world-famous Devils Tail logo was commissioned and the brand was launched.

Always First

With the joint hydraulic market experience of Simon Lane and Chris Porter, HEL Performance launched a new system of motorcycle brake lines which didn't compete directly with reusable brake line products. The system, which was the first fully swaged brake line in the UK marketplace, used only the finest materials of stainless steel and titanium and refused to use the cheaper alternatives of mild steel or aluminium which rust or corrode. Cost has never, and will never, replace quality. Since the introduction of the system we have seen our competition bringing out their own versions of the swaged brake line system which strengthens our original decision to offer a tamper evident, safer, permanently attached brake line fitting to the marketplace. We feel that the industry has been taken forward by the instigation of our radical and exciting concepts and designs. We have made braking a safer and more advanced market place.

Always Number One

We were also the first manufacturer in the industry to offer a PVC cover applied during the hose manufacture to protect the bodywork and paint of the vehicle. Previously covers were applied by way of a heatshrink which gave a sub-standard finish and which would make colour matching future lines impossible. By choosing to have the PVC applied during the hose construction meant our stock holding and investment was massively increased over competitors but did give us the highest quality finish in the marketplace.

Soon all our competitors replaced in-house heat shrinking with pre covered hose. We were the first manufacturer in the world to offer coloured stainless steel fittings as a safe replacement to dangerous coloured aluminium brake line fittings. Aluminium fittings on stainless steel hose subjected to the introduction of water results in a battery effect taking place resulting in electrolytic corrosion.
This could lead to the failure of the fitting and was something we felt ethically unable to offer to a consumer looking to get a high performance brake product. We were also the first to exploit the internet fully by offering the first online shopping area and online warranty registration for customers. We feel that the industry has been taken forward by the instigation of our radical and exciting concepts and designs. We know that by changing the industry through innovation we have helped to create a safer and improved product for the consumer.

PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT

New developments have included the world's first mountain bike brake line kit that includes all fittings required to manufacture a hose for any current system. We have also launched a full automotive brake line application list which again only uses stainless steel fittings directly swaged on one of fifteen different coloured pvc covered brake lines. We are working with one of the world's largest motorcycle brake disc, caliper and master cylinder manufacturers to allow them to offer the complete system to their customers. Our products have appeared in local, national and international competition and help set new records worldwide.

Since starting this journey 18 years ago HEL Performance products have spread around the world. We pride ourselves on the fact that we do not have a single company representative on the road and instead have allowed the product to impress and extend itself around the globe.
